The 180th Fighter Wing conducted functional flight testing, which resulted in a likely sonic boom across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. The test was conducted before 2:30 p.m. and was loud enough to hear across several communities and cause some homes to shake. The Ohio Air National Guard regularly conducts these tests, which occur over 30,000 feet and can still produce a sonic boom once supersonic speeds reach. The check flight is conducted following heavy maintenance and involves rigorous testing and maneuvers to ensure all systems function properly.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Did you hear the boom?

The 180th Fighter Wing conducted functional flight testing Wednesday that resulted in what was likely a sonic boom, a spokesperson confirmed.

Residents across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan reported hearing the sonic boom before 2:30 p.m., loud enough to hear across numerous communities and powerful enough for some to feel their homes shake.

The Ohio Air National Guard routinely conducts these tests and says while they normally happen over 30,000 feet, area residents can still hear the sonic boom once supersonic speeds are reached.

“A functional check flight is conducted following heavy maintenance on the aircraft, putting the aircraft through strenuous testing and maneuvers to ensure all systems of the aircraft function properly and ensuring mission readiness, before putting the aircraft back into operational rotation,” a spokesperson said.
