Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is visiting Indian Lake on Tuesday to get an update on the cleanup process after the area was slammed by tornadoes on March 14.

WEATHER | Tuesday begins with rain; hail, winds, possible tornadoes this afternoon

DeWine and several other state leaders spoke to the media before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Before the governor began his remarks, he offered a quick note about the potential for a new round of severe weather Tuesday, which could include more tornadoes.

"Ohio really has a bullseye directly on us," he said. "This is a dangerous day for Ohioans."

DeWine then spoke specifically about rebuilding efforts in Indian Lake.

"We have individuals who have lost their homes ... we have many people who have been displaced, who don't have any place to live," he said. "We also have small businesses that are not able to function. Some of our villagers ... frankly do not have the money, who are getting hit with a lot of extra expenses."

The governor said he is working with other state officials.

"I have been working with the leadership of the legislature; they are very interested and want to be of help," DeWine said. "This is going to be a combined effort. We are all working together now to come up with a plan."

The Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Mary Mertz, the Director of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, Sima Merick, along with other elected officials representing the area joined DeWine on Tuesday.

His visit comes 19 days after an EF-3 tornado devastated several communities in Logan County.

"I'm optimistic about the future of Indian Lake," the governor said. "Indian Lake will come back."

On Friday, DeWine initiated several federal and state disaster aid mechanisms, including his request to the President for a major disaster declaration, that could bring financial relief to Ohioans affected by the severe weather.

The request came after FEMA teams surveyed weather-related damage in 11 Ohio counties.

The Governor also initiated several steps last week that he hoped would lead to potential relief for Indian Lake and the surrounding communities.

Under his direction, Ohio is developing a plan for state-level financial relief programs for individuals and businesses that can be implemented jointly with the Ohio General Assembly while the federal government evaluates the request.

DeWine is also asking for relief from the Small Business Administration, which issues low-interest loans to businesses and individuals to cover eligible damages.
