Chemical tank leak forces evacuation in Toledo, closure of schools and workplaces
Dozens were sent to the hospital suffering from burning eyes and throats following the release of toxic glycidyl methacrylate following an incident at MC Tank Transport in North Toledo on Tuesday evening. A toxic chemical tank leak from a 5,500-gallon tank in North Toledo, Ohio, led to an evacuation and closure of schools and workplaces across the Ohio-Michigan border. The release of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) led to nearly 1,000 residents being evacuated and a shelter-in-place order affecting tens of thousands of people. School on both sides of the Ohio and Michigan border closed, including Toledo Public Schools and Bedford Public Schools in Michigan. The city ordered everyone within one mile of the terminal to evacuate at 10:48 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a shelter in place order covering more than 50,000 people. The tank had not stopped leaking, but has significantly slowed, according to a city spokesperson. Concerns were raised about the long-term effects of the chemical, which can cause skin irritation and eye irritation and is a probable carcinogen. The Ohio EPA said the chemical came from the tank due to an error when the material was being transferred. It is not clear what methodology was used to determine whether it was safe for residents to return home and send children back to schools in the area.
