Toledo evacuation zone shrinks as crews respond to chemical leak
Officials say the release occurred during a transfer operation and was not caused by an explosion. Officials in Toledo have reduced the evacuation zone around a Toledo tank terminal after a chemical leak led to evacuations and shelter-in-place orders affecting thousands of residents. The evacuation area has been reduced to a quarter-mile radius around 1266 Progress Ave., the MC Tank Terminal. Residents and businesses outside this zone have been allowed to return while those within this quarter-moon area remain under an evacuation order. The chemical released was identified as glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in the production of plastics, paints, coatings and resins. The release occurred during a transfer operation and was not caused by an explosion. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
