What is a seiche? High wind speeds expose lake bed in northwest Ohio

Wind speeds as strong as 60 mph pushed water away from Lake Erie's western basin on Monday. Strong wind gusts from a low pressure system have caused a seiche in Lake Erie and the Maumee River, Ohio. The phenomenon occurs when strong winds and rapid changes in atmospheric pressure push water from one end to another, causing it to be pushed away from the western basin near Buffalo, New York. The strong winds reduced water levels in the Maummee River and nearby Lake Erie shores by as much as 4 to 6 feet. The seiche can lead to significant flooding, but it will take time to return.
