Toledo Blade to close Dec. 31, laying off 116 workers
Block Communications filed a WARN notice with Ohio on Friday confirming the planned shutdown. The Toledo Blade, the longtime newspaper of record for Toledo, plans to close by Dec. 31 and lay off its 116 workers. The Blade's owner, Block Communications, filed a Worker Adjustment and Training Notification with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The move comes after Block Communications announced it would close The Blade if it could not find a buyer. All workers will be let go permanently on Dec.31, with no re-employment rights. Block Communications is still pursuing a sale, effects bargaining and severance pay as ways to avoid the closure. In August, Toledo NewsGuild members voted against a proposed two-year contract offer, objecting to language that would allow work currently performed by guild members to be outsourced to artificial intelligence systems, freelancers, managers or other sources.
