Toledo Blade slated to end publication at end of year, more than 100 employee layoffs expected
The Toledo Blade has been a staple of the community for nearly 200 years. The Toledo Blade, owned by Block Communications Inc., is set to end publication on Dec. 31, 2026 and permanently lay off over 100 employees. The state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WERT) letter stated that 116 employees will be affected, with no bumping or reemployment rights. The Blade, which has been publishing for nearly 200 years, reported last month that if Block couldn't find a buyer, the publication would shut down. The company's other major newspaper, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, was sold to Vernoulis Institute for Local Journalism soon after.
