A Brief Pause at Jeep's Toledo Plant Won't Reach Showrooms

Stellantis paused Wrangler assembly in Toledo for two shifts after an incident at a neighboring facility. Two plant stoppages in one month, one of which occurred outside of Stellantis' control, occurred during a labor dispute where workers have voted to authorize a strike. The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department issued an immediate evacuation order following a hazardous material release at MC Tank Transport, a bulk liquid chemical storage facility, on October 20. The north plant of the Toledo Assembly Complex, which produces the Jeep Wrangler, sent workers home that night and canceled both Wednesday shifts due to the incident. The south plant, which manufactures the Gladiator, was also not running, but its closure was unrelated to the spill. The United Auto Workers vice president Kevin Gotinsky, who heads the union’s Stellantes department, said the union was monitoring the situation closely for members who live and work in the city. The stoppage of a few days against a six-month supply is invisible to customers, as dealers currently hold 156 days of Wrangler inventory against a figure of 85 days they typically aim for. The timing of the stoppage coincides with market conditions indicating Stellants does not currently need the vehicles, which is a statement on demand rather than on circumstance.
