SYLVANIA, Ohio — The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards has granted the city of Sylvania a designation as a Certified Autism Center, an appointment that signals the city and its staff are better equipped to help understand individuals with autism and those with sensory sensitivities.

According to a press release, the board granted Sylvania the designation after key city staff members completed autism training and certification. In addition to better understanding and assisting individuals with autism, the designation prepares city staff to assist the local business community to do the same.

The Sylvania Chamber of Commerce has also been granted the designation, according to the release, meaning together, the city of Sylvania as a whole is a Certified Autism Destination. Cities with these designations were awarded them because of their trained and certified lodging, entertainment and recreation organizations. The board said these cities can better welcome travelers to the area because of their commitment to accessibility.

Other communities are working to join Sylvania in achieving this designation. Destination Toledo is working to train city organizations, like TARTA, to render the entire city more accessible. In 2023, it helped Toledo Express Airport become the first airport to be a Certified Autism Center in the country.
